Hi If any of you taking Humira has had any unusual effects visually I would be grateful if you would let me know. I am having a bit of a rough time with my vision at the moment and am trying to work out what may be causing it. Any contributions gratefully received. Love Melanie

Hi Mel,
I did have something strange happen to my eyes last February but didn't connect it to humira, don't know if it was due to that or just me. I suddenly had flashing lights in the corner of my left eye and a sort of black shadow down one side. That settled quickly but I was left with a large floater that is still there now.(like a blob of jelly). My optician said it was a vitreous tear and the floater will eventually be absorbed, but said it could happen in the other eye. I didn't mention humira, although he does know I'm on it, because I didn't suspect it as a cause. My vision is not affected by this at all now. I also occasionally get flashing lights which he said are migraines without the headache. I didn't get it before starting humira, lasts about 20 minutes each time. What problems are you having?

Hi Doreen thanks for your reply. I had in July a silver like spiral in my right eye, started in the right side and slowly moved to centre. I went and laid down as I assumed it may be a migraine, something that I have never suffered with, I shut my eyes but could still see the spiral. AFTer an hour it went and I was ok but felt weak for the rest of the day. went to gp and they said it was prob a migraine but unusual at my age to start to get them and to go back if I had another. Well I had another in August then last week I had 3 on diferent days at diferent times doing diferent things. They now last about 20 mins I have to close my eyes put my hands over them and just wait. For the first time also it happened in my left eye instead. I only thought of the drug because it seems to happen in the week in which I take it and also because I restarted this drug aT THE END OF June after having my hip replaced. My rheumy department do not agree that it could be the drugs but i do feel a little scared and am going to my gp next week. I will let you know what they say. Love Melanie

Sounds just like me Mel, only I see a circle with spikes round the edge! I just sit with my eyes closed (although I can still see it with them closed) and ,like yours, it passes in about 20 minutes. I had a week in June when I got it almost every day but only had it about twice since then. Will be interested to see what your doc says.

Thanks for the info Jenni. I hadn't thought of Humira being the cause. Do they usually stop the humira when it is causing migraines or is it safe to carry on with it?

In my experience if the humira is working they give you medication and treatment for the migrane.
taking migraleve i think is over the counter but check it with the GP first- i think if you start with the problem just after the humira you need to take it as the migrane starts.
there are other things too.how to be a velvet bulldoser

Beware of Migraleve ultra though! I bought it a few months ago instead of the usual as I had not managed to get straight to the pharmacist. Within half an hour I had a racing heart and was really sick. The pain was so bad that I called the out of hours surgery.
They also told me, if you get cocodamol for RA pain, no need to buy pink and yellow packs as the yellow are just cocodamol. Just buy the pink packs. Worth knowing XX Ailsa

Well this is my update from my visit to GP. He was very helpful and asked me to go to my opticians and get an eye health check up before we look at anything else. This I did and he checked very thoroughly with special drops and told me that he feels my eyes are healthy but to take a report back to my gp and to tell him he must check heart lungs and one of the main arteries in the neck for good circulation. Of course I opened the report to read it and it asked my GP to do the checks and to send me to the eye specialist and marked it all Urgent. Now am rather worried. I must say that I did have another turn this morning with my vision and once more it was in the week following my Humira injection, I have so far never had it in the week after. I am going to see the gp on Wednesday so will bring you up to date. Love Melanie

Well up date from GP visit on wednesday. He said he would not bother sending me to an eye specialist as the opticians check had stated healthy eyes. Next step he said was to go and see if i had sufffered or was likely to with strokes or something else which I have forgotten He said he would arrange it . To my surprise I had a call from the hospital today to ask me to go next week a something clinic, I would have alot of tests and then see a doctor for the results it would all take about 4 hours. I feel worried now, I am a big baby, but I just do not know what to expect. Has anybody any info? But again I will let you know what happens. Love Melanie

Hello Mel,
Sorry I do not have any advice on this type of test, but I am sure someone will have been down a similar line.
Good luck though

Well trip to hospital went well yesterday, I had a ct scan of my brain a chest xray a lot of blood tests a glucose test and urine test The good news was they could not find anything wrong except my esr rate is to high and I need help to get RA under control!! I know this but nobody wants to listen to me but that is another subject. The doc at the hospital said of course it is not your anti tnf causing this, I do not know why all the medical people seem so adverse to this idea. Anyway I have to have more tests as they think i have had some mini strokes, this sounded very strange to me when there does not seem to be any evidence to support this. Other then the doc thinking one eye was smaller then the other and my face was not perfectly symetrical!! I keep looking in the mirror but can not see what the doc saw. I have got to have a machine on for 24 hours to check my heart. Visit the cardiac department for more tests have an ultra sound done and they want me to have an mri scan of my head. well the mri scan seems a test to far to me, I have had two done and swore after the last time I would never have another, I am very claustrophobic and also now have my metal hip. Has anyone had an mri scan of the head? Please be honest how was it? and does anyone know what that would show them that the other scan could not. I do not know if it is worth going through all of the stress that it would mean for me and I thought that I would wait and see how the other test go first. What do you guys think? sorry to have taken so long with this entry Love Melanie
